A Man’s Got To Hate Someone, I Might As Well Just Start With You

You got new locks on the single-wide, and chucked out all my stuff

With a note tellin’ me to hit the road, ‘cause I wasn’t man enough

I got these high school football trophies to say that isn’t true

If I was man enough for Coach Kincaid, that’s man enough for you.

Well, I’ve got to get these words down before I plumb explode

If you want to mine for anger, friend, you’ve hit the mother lode.

It’s a damn thin line ‘tween love and hate, that much is surely true

A man’s got to hate someone—I might as well just start with you.

Sayin’ I’m not a real man leaves me perplexed and sad,

I gave you the best lovin’ that you surely ever had

Needless to say I was less than amused by your retort

“I wanted me a three-iron, and you came up a club short.”

I guess that it’s just Nature’s way, no ifs or ands or buts

But I feel like an ol’ gray squirrel, and you’ve stolen my nuts.

It’s a damn thin line ‘tween love and hate, that much is surely true

A man’s got to hate someone—I might as well just start with you.

You won’t get the satisfaction of seein’ this good old boy cry

Though I could surely lay right down in this roadhouse and die

I’ll handle your departure with panache and aplomb

And grit my teeth and smile when I move back in with Mom

Well, I’m thinking that I never really needed you at all

‘Cause I’ve got this old hanky and Farrah’s poster on the wall.

It’s a damn thin line ‘tween love and hate, that much is surely true

A man’s got to hate someone—I might as well just start with you.

I’m gonna have to come to grips with the fact that we are through,

And pray to God and hope you’ll up and die before I do

So I can pour some whiskey on your grave to quench your thirst

Please don’t take offense if it passes through my bladder first.

You said that I was nothin’ but a loser and a clown,

But I’ll kick dirt on you with Bozo’s shoes when they lay you in the ground.

It’s a damn thin line ‘tween love and hate, that much is surely true

A man’s got to hate someone—I might as well just start with you.

  1. I really like the content and the individual lines, but I read and re-read and I can’t get the flow to work for me. I know it’s intentional, but I’m kind of not getting it. As always, your style is very distinctive, and there’s a driness to the humour which I really enjoy.

  2. think it’s the first piece that rhymes, i read by you – and i like both, flow and content. you capture that struggle well and your writing gives me as a woman an insight into what men try to hide usually behind a mask. very well done
